Moldavite is a rare and captivating gemstone, formed approximately 15 million years ago when a massive meteorite struck what is now southern Germany. The intense heat and pressure from this impact melted local rock and ejected molten debris into the atmosphere, which then solidified and rained back down to Earth. This striking forest-green to olive-green natural glass is primarily found in the Czech Republic, specifically within the regions of Bohemia and Moravia. In Bohemia, the most famous and historically significant deposits are located near the Vltava River (Moldau), from which the stone derives its name, particularly in the area around Besednice and the České Budějovice basin. Further deposits extend into Moravia, near towns such as Třebíč and Slavětice, where the stones often exhibit a slightly different texture and appearance. These Czech localities remain the most renowned source of this intriguing tektite, prized both for its otherworldly origin and its distinctive, deeply sculpted surface.
